Magnetic Sump Plugs - Saloon and SP250

Sump plugs

Fine metallic particles in the sump will cause problems if not quickly captured, hence the use of a magnetic sump plug makes sound common sense.

The SP250 sump plugs were originally made of brass and over the decades will have been subject to some significant wear and tear. The V8 saloon sump plug was not brass, but will still have a few workshop scars.

In the main, the majority of saloons will still be running a non-magnetic sump plug and the SP250 never had that option, being brass.

“J&E Engineering Services” has manufactured a batch of these units, for the Daimler V8 saloon and the SP250. Each respective model uses a different size sump plug.

All sump plugs produced by “J&E” utilise powerful rare earth magnets to attract the smallest of ferrous particles suspended within the engine oil. The unique design does NOT rely on the magnet alone or adhesive to secure the magnet to the plug, but rather a rivet through the centre which prevents magnet detachment whilst in service or being cleaned; hence a far superior design. All sump plugs come complete with both a bonded (Dowty) seal and a copper sealing washer for your preferred option.

One tool that is often sought after during V8 Saloon engine rebuilding, is the Crankshaft Rear Seal Pre-Sizing Tool, ref: V.L. Churchill D.505. 
 

The D.505 is the tool that ensures the size & fit of the rope seal is correct: too tight it will overheat, burn and harden. Too much clearance will allow oil to pass and leak !! Some classic car garages may own this tool, but asking to borrow such will likely result in a polite refusal.

Such is the importance of seating / fitting the split rope seal, that only by using the correct tool can one guarantee a positive outcome. The absence of such a tool has now been rectified, as “J&E Engineering Services” has re-manufactured the tool. This precision ground tool, has been engineered to the identical exacting specifications, that V.L. Churchill stipulated for the rear crankshaft pre-sizing tool. If you are embarking on an engine rebuild, then at some stage you will need this tool to size the rope seal properly along with the correct tolerance, should you wish to avoid the
incorrect results as mentioned earlier.
 

Of note, very late Daimler SP250 "C" Spec vehicles used the same rope seal system as the saloon; hence this tool will also be of interest to those owners.

One essential tool that is extremely difficult to obtain is the V.L Churchill JD1 Rear Hub Puller (for solid wheels only), which is specific to the Daimler V8 Saloon 5-stud wheel pattern.

The good news is that a replica of this tool has been crafted to the same exacting engineering standards that V.L Churchill produced.
